OUR SHOP
Hatchfinders Fly Shop located in Livingston, MT is one of the most unique fly shops you will ever come across. We tie every fly we sell and we take extreme care and pride in the quality of the fly you fish with. It is a service that is not usually done anymore, but at Hatchfinders for us it is all about the fishing. Hatchfinders is a full service fly shop. We offer guided trips and are licensed to service Yellowstone National Park. We have every essential you need. We offer rods, reels, terminal tackle, boots, waders, flies, and a large variety of tying materials. Our prices are affordable and our service impeccable. Every person who walks in our shop is greeted with a smile and hello. We love to talk fishing and fly tying, so any question you may have we will be happy to answer. We are a second-generation family owned business. For 12 years our shop was located in downtown Livingston. After all that time we decided to move our beloved fly shop to a bigger and better location. Our new location is just a few miles to the Yellowstone River and we are on the way to Yellowstone National Park. Just swing off of Interstate 90 exit 333 and head South. We are also just next door to the Federation of Fly Fishers! We have a large parking area so folks can swing in with their boats as they are on the way to the river. Our shop is homey, laid back, and casual. The coffee is always on. Dean’s dog Pookie will greet you at the door and is always looking for a lap to sit on. We hope to be your fly-fishing headquarters.
OUR STAFF
Dean Reiner
Longtime Montana Outfitter, Dean Reiner, opened the fly shop itself in 1999. He wanted to start a business that like-minded people could join in and discuss the wonders of fly-fishing and fly tying. Mostly a self-taught fly tyer, Dean was dismayed at the poor quality of flies he was purchasing from other retailers. He decided he could do a better job on his own. After years and years of tying he started to design his own innovative patterns. His most popular is the Pink Pookie. It’s a foam hopper pattern with a pink underbody. The fish and fishermen go mad for it and it is all we can do to keep it in stock. Montana Fly Company also sells the Pink Pookie and is listed in their catalog.
Dean started fishing as a child in the streams and creeks of Pennsylvania. It became a passion for him immediately. He even took his favorite South Bend fly rod with him to Vietnam when he was serving for the Marine Corps. Please check out his Purple Foxes link to learn more. After a couple of trips to Montana, Dean moved here in 1981. He decided this was the place to raise his daughters Dandy and Mandy and where he could fish his heart out on the banks of the Yellowstone River.
Dean handed the fly shop over to his daughter Dandy, but still comes in to tie for the shop. In his semi-retirement he travels to far away locales such as Japan, Bahamas, and Mexico where he pursues his passion for fishing. To read about his travels be sure to check out the Fly-Fishing with Pookie page.
Dandy Reiner
Dandy grew up following her father in his fishing jaunts along with her sister Mandy. It is where they learned about fly-fishing and it kept them out of trouble. Dandy was educated in Park County and attended Montana State University achieving a degree in English Literature. In 2005 she started tying flies in Hatchfinders Fly Shop to help Dean out with his fly inventory. It soon turned into a full time job and she is now the owner of Hatchfinders Fly Shop. Dandy loves tying flies and takes pride in her quality of work. She has been featured on the popular website, The Weekly Fly. When she isn’t in the shop tying or shooting the breeze with customers, she is out enjoying the outdoors and pursues her writing interests in her spare time.
